War on Wal-Mart

OpinionJournal - Hard Line State -- In Big Labor's war against Wal-Mart, "collateral damage"--in the form of lost jobs and income for the poor--is starting to add up.

This doesn't seem like rocket science to me. Anytime the the minimum wage is raised, people (who can least afford it) lose their jobs. Luxury taxes that may cause a reduction in consumption always end up hurting the worker. Now, one state want's to force a certain percentage of their payroll costs to be spent on health care. Noble sounding? Perhaps, but legislators on either side of the aisle should be able to easily see the ramafications of 'forcing' an action. Look beyond the end of your nose.

I don't think that we are considering anything like this in Oklahoma. When you look at what the results of this law will be for Maryland, a lesson has to be drawn between responsibility of the state, and the ultimate success of business to create jobs (and therefore tax payers!).

Rev. Lonnie Latham--Another Victim of the Southern Baptist Lie Regarding Homosexuality

While we are trying to grasp the 'awesomeness' of the fall of a local spritual leader, the LGBT puts it all in perspective for us....

"No one should have to come out via an undercover sting operation. That is its own evil. Until the Southern Baptist Convention ends their spiritual violence against gay and lesbian people, tragedies like this will continue."

Thoughts to Ponder in 2006

My wife sent me the following email with the top ten things to think about in the New Year:

Number 10 - Life is sexually transmitted.
Number 9 - Good health is merely the slowest possible rate at which one can die.
Number 8 - Men have two emotions: Hungry and Horny. If you see him without an erection, make him a sandwich.
Number 7 - Give a person a fish and you feed them for a day; teach a person to use the Internet and they won't bother you for weeks.
Number 6 - Some people are like a Slinky...not really good for anything, but you still can't help but smile when you see one tumbledown the stairs.
Number 5 - Health nuts are going to feel stupid someday, lying in hospitals dying of nothing.
Number 4 - All of us could take a lesson from the weather. It pays no attention to criticism.
Number 3 - Why does a slight tax increase cost you two hundred dollars and a substantial tax cut saves you thirty cents?
Number 2 - In the 60's, people took acid to make the world weird. Now the world is weird and people take Prozac to make it normal.

AND THE NUMBER 1 THOUGHT FOR 2006 - We know exactly where one cow with mad-cow-disease is located among the millions and millions of cows in this country but we haven't got a clue as to where thousands of illegal immigrants and terrorists are located. Maybe we should put the Department of Agriculture in charge of immigration!

BatesLine: Mayor Bill LaFortune afoul of ethics rules

BatesLine: Mayor Bill LaFortune afoul of ethics rules
Last Tuesday, December 27, Councilor Jim Mautino notified City Clerk Mike Kier that Mayor Bill LaFortune appears to be in violation of the city's ethics ordinance,...

What's happened to the town I once knew? We have replaced the lethargic Savage years with a local government that seems to have one mis-step after another. Michael Bates has the latest.
